«And they will not beget» [Q 71:27], that is, they will not produce and will not make manifest, «any but a libertine (fājir)» [Q 71:27], that is, one who makes manifest what was veiled, «[and] ingrate (kaffār)» [Q 71:27], that is, one who veils what became manifest after its manifestation. So they make manifest what was veiled, then veil it after its manifestation; and so the beholder is bewildered and does not know the intent of the libertine in his libertinage, nor of the one who veils in his veiling (kufr), while the person is one. «My Lord, forgive me» [Q 71:28], that is, veil me, and veil [others] for my sake, so that my measure and my station remain unknown, just as Your measure is unknown in Your saying: «They did not measure God with His true measure» [Q 6:91]. «And my two parents» [Q 71:28]: those of whom I was a result, and they are intellect and nature. «And whoever enters my house» [Q 71:28], that is, my heart, «as a believer» [Q 71:28]: one who assents to what comes to be within it of the divine reports, and that is what [their] souls have spoken of to themselves.

That is: because they are wicked (fājirūn) in manifesting their satanic egotism and claiming lordship, and disbelievers (kaffārūn) in concealing the Divine Reality through their egotisms. So their children will only be in the image of their secrets — as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The child is the secret of his father.' So they beget only one who manifests his egotism through the false and mendacious claim of lordship concealed within him, concealing, through the egotism, the Divine Reality that appeared in his form after it had [truly] appeared — so that he becomes one who confounds God's servants in his claim.

i.e., they will not produce offspring nor manifest [anything] "except a profligate (fājir)" - meaning one who manifests what was concealed - "and an ingrate (kaffār)" - meaning one who conceals what became manifest after its manifestation. Thus they manifest what was concealed, then conceal it after its manifestation, so that the observer is bewildered and cannot discern the profligate's intent in his profligacy nor the ingrate's intent in his ingratitude, though the person is one. He (may God be pleased with him) means: that the offspring of the disbelievers who conceal themselves through their singular divine determinations (taʿayyunāt), and their products - i.e., the forms of their secrets, which consist in bringing forth the gathering of unity (tawḥīd) into multiplicity and delimitation - even if You granted them life for the eternal ages, and immersed them in the light of existence and manifestation, and immersed their I-nesses (inniyyāt) in Your He-ness (huwiyya) in the stations of light, they would only increase in profligacy, which is the intensity of manifestation of what must be concealed, in the places where the veils ought to be lowered - through their outward display of the claim to lordship latent and lurking within them through wrongdoing and falsehood, and their concealment from Your true essential Lordship after the completion of manifestation, through the singular gathering (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ) of all matters, with ingratitude. The purpose of creation is that You be known and not denied or disbelieved, but rather manifested - for You did not create them except to be worshipped, not to be repudiated. These, even though they worshipped You, worshipped You only in their own selves and caprices, separately, and denied You in the singular gathering of Your Divinity (lāhūt) in their thoughts and opinions. They went to the utmost extreme in their tyranny through profligacy, until they manifested the relations of non-existence (nisab ʿadamiyya) as existential entities (aʿyān wujūdiyya), and worshipped them as lords with every form of servitude, and concealed the reality of the singular gathering of Your oneness within the entities of the idol-tyrants of manifestation, behind the veils - dark, luminous, and ontic - of concealment. So forbid them this utmost tyranny, and restrain them from profligacy, ingratitude, and disobedience. Overtake them with the light of unveiling and the flood of direct vision (ʿiyān), seize them with drowning, and deliver them from the depths of separation (farq). Cause what had receded in the earth of their determinations to well forth as light, so that it boils over like an oven, and send down upon them what overflowed of chastisement, overflowing like the surging sea. "So We opened the gates of heaven with pouring water, and caused the earth to burst forth with springs, so the waters met for a matter already decreed." He (may God be pleased with him) said: "'My Lord, forgive me'

— in the passive construction — that is, one who manifests what the Real, Glory be to Him, had concealed within him of the secrets of Lordship, by displaying them among creation

al-Qayṣarī

as they know today in His saying, exalted is He: "He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Nonmanifest." For it is explicit that nothing in existence is other than Him, yet they interpret it according to what they attain of knowledge by their intellects, just as they interpret His saying: "And He is with you wherever you are," and similar verses.

Ibn Turka

meaning the rulings of servanthood ('ubūdiyya), for they conceal it after it had become manifest to them

according to what the two stations, lordship and servanthood, require — meaning: at times they speak of the oneness of existence (waḥdat al-wujūd) and its traces and rulings pertaining to lordship, and manifest to their hearers the mysteries of lordship within them; and at times they speak from multiplicity and servanthood

al-Qāshānī

That is: they manifest, through their claim, what was concealed of the [true] lordship, and claim through their egotisms that they are the Lord — meaning, they claim that the manifest egotism is the concealed Lord within them, falsely and mendaciously. Then, in reality, they themselves do not [truly] see that which they claim has become manifest, after its manifestation in their forms, in reality.

Ibn Turka

to them, by manifesting the secrets of lordship. This is among the things that necessitate bewilderment for those seeking guidance, for servanthood is effaced and hidden in itself, with no way for it to become manifest; yet after it becomes manifest to their own selves, you see them concealing it

Jāmī

when they are called to account for its requirements and are incapable of fulfilling it

al-Qāshānī

That is: the observer seeking the Real becomes bewildered regarding the manifestation and the concealment, and does not know that the wicked one, in manifesting lordship through his claim to it, is [at the same time] the concealer of it in his concealment — that very locus of manifestation, falsely and mendaciously — while in fact the manifesting-concealing person is one and the same, and this is the very essence of misguidance and bewilderment. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

al-Qayṣarī

That is, the observer is bewildered by their speech, and does not know the purpose of those who disclose in their disclosure, nor the aim of those who conceal in their concealment—just as issues today from the gnostics (ʿurafāʾ). That disclosure only occurs from the overwhelming of Unity upon them, while concealment occurs only when they return to themselves and multiplicity (kathra) overwhelms them. And it must remain thus until the Seal of the Saints (khātam al-awliyāʾ) appears and the matter is unveiled for all.

That is, the state is that the profligate discloser is the very one who conceals what he disclosed and declares himself an unbeliever at another time—as is well known of Abū Yazīd in his saying: "There is no god but I," and "Glory be to me, how great is my affair!" How much more so when the discloser is someone else entirely—just as al-Junayd gave the legal ruling for the execution of al-Ḥallāj, may God be pleased with them both. The observer is bewildered, for if the discloser were other than the concealer, perhaps the observer would not have fallen into bewilderment.

Bālī Zāde

whereas the manifester and the concealer are one and the same — how could he contradict himself? So when he called them to God, exalted is He, that He might forgive them — i.e., conceal them for their sake — and prayed against them with concealment, he was praying for himself and his followers with concealment, and this is the very thing to which he called them. So Noah, upon him peace, desired for others nothing but what he desired for himself; thus his prayer against them was to God, exalted is He, not for his own desire of vengeance or otherwise, in his saying, may God be pleased with him

Bālī Zāde

and had it been for his own desire, he would not have prayed for himself with the like of what he prayed against them — this being an explanatory conjunction (ʿaṭf tafsīr) to his statement: conceal me, i.e., conceal my Essence for my sake, by the lights of Your Essence, that I might be everlastingly annihilated in You, just as the people are everlastingly annihilated in You through my prayer against them. So he prayed for concealment for all of them, lest they lead His servants astray, and he prayed for concealment for himself so that his rank might remain unknown — for the one whose rank is unknown is so on account of the loftiness of his station — ("so that my station and rank might remain unknown") such that none other than You might come to know of my station, nor attain to it

That is, conceal my attributes and perfections from my own manifestation, that it may be a treasure for the hereafter. (fa-yajhalu maqāmī wa-qadrī) is passive voice. That is, conceal my perfections lest creation become aware of my station and my worth with You, and so envy me and destroy me, as

Ibn Turka

taking the lām as a lām of purpose. Among these rulings is what Noah said in a supplication detailed for himself and his people, and he combined the two because their import is one, namely the concealment of his own reality and the reality of all who are within the ambit of his calling, by means of the rulings of their entifications (taʿayyunāt), so that the matter upon which the intended outcome depends might be completed, in accordance with what the rank of prophethood and messengership requires of establishing forms and nurturing the realities within them — especially what is peculiar to the Noahic Word, for it is the founder of this edifice and the one who paves its foundations. This is because if the realities were not hidden by their forms, clothed in their concealing rulings, but were rather manifest to all, the affair of existence would not be ordered, since there would then be no differentiation (tafāḍul), and so the one commanded would not submit to the commander, nor the worshipper (al-maʾlūh) to the god (al-ilāh). To this the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, alluded in his saying

Jāmī

taking the lām to indicate purpose (taʿlīl); and he joined the two by "and," alerting to what was mentioned earlier — that the specific meaning that the tongues of the Sacred Laws have articulated does not exhaust all that may be understood from the aspects of the wording, in whatever tongue it was expressed according to the conventions of that tongue; rather both meanings are intended together. That is: let this concealment that I seek not be against me, in the sense that being characterized by it would be a means of resemblance (muḍāhāt) between me and You, a means of nearness rather than of distance (so that my station may remain unknown) among creation, and no one may become aware of it

So the divine reckoning and demand turned upon them, through the manifestation of the unity pervading (al-waḥda al-sāriya) the veiling multiplicity of which they are the form of its shadow-like comprehensive detailing; for had the comprehensiveness (jamʿiyya) not been in them, they would not have been held accountable for what was not in them — 'God does not charge a soul except with what He has given it' — and [for] their slackness, for had the calling been comprehensive and unitary (jamʿiyya aḥadiyya), combining unveiling and concealment, secrecy and openness of the matter, they would have answered him to that, by virtue of the comprehensiveness within them, and the calling would not have occurred through an intermediary, while they were [already] answering the summoner of the matter joined to the essential will without intermediary. Necessarily, then, they were occupied with the manifest aspect of the summoner, away from the nonmanifest aspect of the event, and the essential divine command overwhelmed them — that to which they responded in essence, and which they heard, and to which they hastened in act and state, and which they obeyed and followed — because the command occurred without any cosmic or veiling similitudinal intermediary, but rather through an entitative self-disclosure (tajallī ʿaynī) and a volitional command; so they obeyed it in act, state, and essence, for God Most High has none to repel His command, nor any to reverse His judgment among created things. So when Noah's calling openly toward the secret, and unveiling toward concealment, had no effect — he too being concealed from them by the veiling of similitude, and being commanded to unveil that concealment from them — he began to call them to [divine] unity secretly, without openness; so the calling to the secret was by the secret, yet it had no effect upon them, because they were absorbed away from the nonmanifest by the manifest; so they disbelieved in what the command brought, and proclaimed openly their harming of him, and manifested their rejection of his call. And among his calling, in this second station of secrecy — as a safeguarding of the secrets from the wicked — was that he said,

By intellect and nature he meant spirit (rūḥ) and soul (nafs), or he referred them to the terminology of the philosophers. And by 'result' he meant the heart (qalb) that arises from the two, for the human reality — expressed as 'I' (anā) — and its secret, belongs to the bearers of the secret for its own sake, such that nothing of it remains — neither root, nor name, nor trace — so it cannot be described, and thus cannot be known.

He interpreted the two parents as intellect and nature because they are the two loci of manifestation of the reality of Adam and Eve in the spiritual world. And since the intellect is active and nature is passive, the intellect was specified for fatherhood and nature for motherhood. What is meant here by "intellect" is the spirit (rūḥ), as is the technical usage of the people of Sufism, not the theoretical and cogitative faculty; and by "nature" is meant the impressed soul (al-nafs al-munṭabiʿa), whose result is the heart (qalb).

Since his supplication for annihilation in God was answered, he set up the egoity (aniyya) of God in place of his own egotism, and his house became his heart, in accordance with his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): 'The heart of the believer is the House of God,' and his saying, relating from his Lord: 'Neither My earth nor My heaven contains Me, but the heart of My believing servant contains Me.' And it is the right of Divine self-disclosure (tajallī) that whatever it discloses itself to should be annihilated, so that nothing remains but Him. Thus the discourses of his heart were Divine reports, and whoever entered it affirmed them as true, being [himself] a gnostic (ʿārif) and one arrived (wāṣil) like him. It thus follows that the discourses of their souls are among those Divine reports, because the heart, and whoever enters it, in the station of annihilation, are within the very Oneness of the All-Comprehensive Unity (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ). So whatever occurs to their minds is a Divine report. The plural pronoun and its form in 'their souls,' referring to whoever enters, is construed according to meaning; and in some copies it reads 'its souls' (anfusihā), on the interpretation referring to the souls (nufūs) and the entities (aʿyān).

In this is an indication that whoever attaches himself to one of the perfect ones (al-kummal) and firmly establishes the subtle bonds of attachment through the ties of love — which is the path to the overflowing effusion of union — and his heart enters into it and takes from it a place for itself, then everything that his soul speaks to itself is among the divine informings coming upon him, and that is due to the manifestation of the dominion of union

He designated the heart's incomings (wāridāt qalbiyya) and spiritual inspirations (ilhāmāt rūḥiyya) as "divine reports" because the heart and spirit are purified from bodily defilements and sanctified from corporeal impurities, and whatever occurs to them corresponds to what is the case in itself, so it is Lordly (rabbānī). Hence it has been said: the first thoughts (al-khawāṭir al-ūlā) are all Lordly and true; it is only the workings and operations of the soul (nafs) that intrude upon them, diverting them from correctness, so that they become soul-talk and satanic whisperings. (And it) that is, what occurs and comes to be in it of divine reports.

al-Qayṣarī

(their souls) is the subject of (spoke). In some copies it reads (themselves, masc. plural), the pronoun being masculine in the verse but made feminine [in the commentary] with regard to (souls, nafs, fem.). This is the definition of the divine report which does not occur by the mediation of an angel. One should not suppose that everything occurring in souls is of this kind; rather, this station belongs to one who has purified his soul of impurities, whose Satan has been made sound and has submitted, and in whose breast the retreating whisperer (al-khannās) does not whisper, and who knows all the stratagems of his soul. When a thought first occurs in his heart, it is a Lordly discourse, the Real speaking through his tongue, just as He speaks through the tongue of another.

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

i.e., the souls of those who enter the station of the heart, for the inner discourses of the possessors of hearts are none other than Real, divine [discourses], whether by the mediation of an angel or without mediation, and they are not disturbed by psychical intimations or satanic whisperings. In some manuscripts it reads 'its soul' (nafsuhā), and it appears that the feminine form here is simply a citation of what is established in the authentic ḥadīth, that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: 'My community is excused for what their souls speak to themselves (mā ḥaddathat bihi anfusuhā), so long as they do not speak it or act upon it,' and 'Indeed God has excused my community for what they are whispered to, or what their souls speak to themselves, so long as they do not act upon it or speak it' (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī). Thus the meaning is that the divine report is what is understood from his saying (peace be upon him): 'Indeed God has excused my community for what their souls speak to themselves, so long as they do not act or speak.' The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: ('and for the believing men' — of the intellects, 'and the believing women' — of the souls. 'And increase not the wrongdoers' — of the darknesses — 'except in ruin' — the people of the Unseen who are enveloped behind the darksome veils. 'Except in ruin,' i.e., destruction, so they do not know their own souls, since they witness the Face of the Real instead of [witnessing] themselves, among the Muḥammadans. 'Everything is perishing except His Face,' and tabār means destruction. Whoever wishes to attain the secrets of Noah must ascend in the ark ('fulk') of Yūḥ [Noah], and this is [explained] in the Mosuline Descents ('al-Tanazzulāt al-Mawṣiliyya') for us, and peace.) As for the aforementioned ḥadīth: ('and the believing men' — of the intellects) meaning the disengaged [intellects], that is, the spirits, for it is their function to exert influence, so they hold the aforementioned rank; ('and the believing women' — of the souls) meaning the impressed souls, for it is their function to receive influence, so they hold the rank of femininity; ('and increase not the wrongdoers') this is taken

i.e., what I have reported — the feminine pronoun being on account of the souls (nufūs) — (and to the believing men from among the intelligible realities and the believing women from among the souls) ("and increase not the wrongdoers") [Nūḥ: 74] — derived (from darkness — the folk of the Unseen), an explanatory conjunction for "the wrongdoers"
