So there must be number and the numbered, and there must be a one that brings that into being, and so [the one] is brought forth by reason of it. Now, if each rank of number is a single reality (like nine, for example, and ten, [going] down to what is lower or up to what is more, without end), then it is not a sum, and yet the name 'aggregate of ones' does not detach from it. For two is a single reality and three is a single reality, however far these ranks reach, even though they are [each] one. So no single entity among them is the very entity of what remains. Thus aggregation takes them up: it affirms them by means of them, [deriving them] from them, and it passes judgement by them upon them. Twenty ranks have appeared in this statement, and composition has entered into them; so you never cease affirming the very entity of what is, in your view, negated in itself.

[we say] of it, from it, and we judge by it upon it. Twenty ranks/levels have appeared in this statement, for composition has entered into it; yet you never cease to affirm the very thing which, for you, is negated in itself. Whoever understands what we have established regarding numbers, and that their negation is identical with their affirmation, knows that the Real who is declared incomparable (al-ḥaqq al-munazzah) is the creation that is declared similar (al-khalq al-mushabbah), even though creation is distinguished from the Creator. So the matter is "the Creator [is] the created," and the matter is "the created [is] the Creator." All of that is from a single entity (ʿayn) - no, rather it is the one entity, and it is the many entities. So look and see what you see: "He said: O my father, do as you are commanded"

In this statement twenty ranks have appeared, and composition has entered into them, yet they never cease to affirm the very thing that is, in itself, negated of them according to you. That is, no rank, insofar as it is one, is a sum composed (of units), by [reason of] the incompatibility of the oneness of unitive gathering, which is multiplicity,

And since number arises through the repetition of the One, there must be a One that brings about that number. So it [the One] arises—that is, the One appears in its diverse levels and stations by virtue of the appearance of number—here the 'cause' (sabab) being the receptive cause. Or: there must be a One that brings number into existence, so that number arises by virtue of that One—the cause here being the agentive cause. The former is more fitting.

"[If] each degree is a single reality - like the nine, for example, and the ten, down to the least and up to the most without end - it is not a collectivity (majmūʿ)." He (may God be pleased with him) means: the nine, the ten, the hundred, the thousand, and other such sets (ʿuqūd) - each set among them is a single reality distinct from the others, named by a name other than the other's, and containing something other than what the other contains. There is no doubt about the oneness of its reality, and this is the oneness of a specified collectivity (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ al-muʿayyan); and its being a collectivity is a consideration additional to its numerical reality, which is specific to this particular collection. So the name is the name of the collective configuration, while the oneness is the oneness of the reality and the entity (ʿayn). He (may God be pleased with him) said: "and the name 'all the units' is not separable from it, for two is a single reality, and three is a single reality, however far these degrees extend; and even though it is one, no single entity among them is identical with the entity of what remains, yet the collectivity (jamʿ) takes it up." He (may God be pleased with him) means: this single reality is not separable from the collecting (jamʿ) of its specified units. He said: "So we predicate it of it" - meaning: we predicate the oneness of that reality of it, i.e., of the reality which is a collective configuration of specified units. "And we judge by it concerning it" - i.e., we judge oneness concerning the reality. He (may God be pleased with him) said: "And twenty degrees have appeared in this statement." He gave this as an example of what he mentioned: if there are twenty degrees in the statement, then a reality has appeared which is the collective oneness (aḥadiyya jamʿiyya) of twenty units. Although this reality is the oneness of the collecting of these specified units, it is nevertheless a single reality from the standpoint of its manifest designation (al-musammā al-ẓāhir), namely, the 'one' within this specified collective configuration. So 'twenty' is a name for the reality of a collective-unitary configuration (hayʾa jamʿiyya aḥadiyya), like a proper name for this specified collection that appeared in the degree of the tens. The mother-degrees (ummahāt al-marātib) of number are four, and their compositional relational simple units (basāʾiṭ) have no end. So understand. He (may God be pleased with him) said: "So composition (tarkīb) has entered into it." He means: when we say 'twenty degrees,' we have said of the reality of a single degree that it is composed of twenty degrees. So this single degree, named 'twenty,' comprises the realities of its simple units (basāʾiṭ). So when we point to the reality of twenty, we say: a single reality - because it is not identical with what remains, for you name what remains by names other than 'twenty,' and likewise what precedes this set (ʿaqd) by names other than it. Each reality among them is single in its own reality. So you say, among the simple units under the set of twenty, for example: nineteen, eighteen, seventeen, down to one - and thus your statement 'twenty' becomes determined. So it is verified that the collective-unitary reality named 'twenty,' even though it is a single degree, is nevertheless the oneness of a collecting (aḥadiyyat jamʿ); and the one, insofar as it is one, is not a collecting, since a collecting is a collection of units. So every single set among these sets, and every single reality among the numerical realities, is taken up by collecting (jamʿ), and composition enters into it. He (may God be pleased with him) said: 'You do not cease affirming the very thing that is in itself negated in your view.' If you say 'twenty,' you have affirmed number and negated oneness; and if you say 'degree' or 'reality,' you have affirmed the oneness of the reality of the specified set and negated number - because the oneness of the reality, or the degree, or the set, does not depend in that respect on the conceptualization of number. You, then, do not cease to negate what you affirm, from two different aspects and considerations. For the number that the reality of a set among the numerical sets comprises is negated of the oneness of the reality insofar as it is the oneness of a specified collectivity; and likewise, within every set, you affirm a specified number while [also affirming] a oneness that is negated of number insofar as it is number. So when you specify a number, you have specified a single set over a totality of collected numbers; so it is a single set comprising a certain specified, finite number of units - and finitude has entered only insofar as it is a specified set, while oneness, insofar as it is that which by its very essence originates these specified sets, is above them and beneath them, encompassing them: 'And God, from behind them, is All-Encompassing' [Q. 85:20]; 'There is no secret conversation among three but that He is their fourth, nor among five but that He is their sixth' [Q. 58:7]. And there is nothing but He. So understand." He (may God be pleased with him) said:

al-Qayṣarī

an aggregate, nor is the name 'collection of units' ever separated from them, for two is a single reality and three is a single reality, however far these levels extend] And in some copies [it reads]:

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

But it is apparent that this is an alteration made by someone who did not understand its meaning and intent, may God be pleased with him. He, may God be pleased with him, said: 'that every level is a single reality'—that is, if we consider, in every level, that by which the particular number designated therein is distinguished from others—namely, that by which two is two and three is three, for example—then it is not merely an aggregate of units; rather, something else joins to it which distinguishes it from others, while the name is never separated from it:

Ibn Turka

since the reality of any of those levels, however far it extends, is nothing but a single [unity] that occurs posterior to the sum total, so that it acquires, by virtue of that relation, the name of its particular level. Then, since that relation is contingent upon the sum total, it only acquires the name of that level after it; so the reality of that level is the single [unity] that pervades

And if we do not consider the things distinguished from one another, [but] take the common measure among them all—which is the collection of units—and consider it, no distinction remains between any of them, just as we consider the genus common to two species, such as man and horse, and judge of both that they are 'animal.'

You should know that this oneness, manifest in these numerical units, has two forms: the first is that which is in numerical multiplicity, and it is what is called 'the level' (al-martaba), to which plurality (al-jamʿ) necessarily attaches, expressed here as 'the concomitant' (al-lāzim). The second is that which is in numerical oneness, which the author has expressed as 'the single entity' (al-ʿayn al-wāḥida). The first of these two is what is called, in the language of logic, 'the form that subsists through matter' (al-ṣūra allatī tataqawwamu bi-l-mādda), and the second is matter itself - just as what is called 'differentia' (al-faṣl) is the first of the two, and 'genus' (al-jins) is the second. For this reason you see the levels of genus arranged in descending order, following the descent of that single entity. From this it becomes clear that plurality has a greater specific connection to that absolute oneness, in that it is the form which it manifests upon the loci of act (majālī al-fiʿl), rather than the single entity. Once this is established, know that it is this plurality which takes that single entity from the ambiguous and concealed depth of the Unseen of absoluteness, and manifests it upon the loci of indication (majālī al-ishʿār), naming it by that single entity from it. For you have already learned that the single entity is the matter and the principle for the specificity of that named reality, and so it becomes the principle for the rest of those specificities - whether indicative or perceptual - and he alluded to the second of these in his saying

al-Qayṣarī

This clause indicates the position we have adopted as the more correct one—namely, that each numerical level (martaba) is a distinct reality (ḥaqīqa). That is, even if all the levels are one in being the sum of units or their aggregate, the entity of any one level among those levels is not the entity of what remains of them, because each level is a reality in its own right, qualified by properties not found in any other. It is also possible that (mā) here carries the meaning of (alladhī)—that is, even if all the levels are one insofar as they revert to a single reality which is the sum of units, then that which is the entity of one of the levels—among the levels of two, three, and so on—is the entity of what remains, in respect of its being an expression of the sum of units. This latter reading is more fitting with his saying:

— because of what was mentioned regarding their differentiation by various distinguishing factors. His saying "For if each rank of number has a single reality" is a conditional clause whose answer follows. His saying "it is not identical with the sum" is a description of "reality." His saying "and does not detach from it" is another description conjoined to it. His saying "For 'two'..." gives the reason for the differentiation of ranks by numbers. The second condition is a qualification of it whose answer is omitted because what precedes it indicates it — that is, "and even though they are one in being totality of units," they are nevertheless different realities.

Bālī Zāde

This is a consideration that regards the Real without creation, whereby the two would be identical with the one, and the three identical with the two, so that all the levels would be identical with the one and identical with one another. This consideration is not a purely subjective one but corresponds to how the matter actually is, on both suppositions. (So the totality takes it) i.e., it takes a single entity, like the one

— so there must be a distinguishing factor, and the distinguishing factor is not unity itself, since unity is shared among the totality; rather, the distinguishing factor must be what occurs in the aggregate of units by way of variation. (So the aggregate, by its taking in) — i.e., it encompasses all the levels, so its name is never separate from them

al-Qāshānī

that is, it encompasses it and applies to it the way a genus applies truly to its species

al-Qayṣarī

That is, since the name "sum of units" is never separate from them, the sum of units—which functions like the genus (jins) for those levels—takes hold of them, gathers them, encompasses them, and is predicated of them just as a genus is truly predicated of its species. Thus it speaks, by means of those levels, of that comprehensive reality which gathers them together, and it renders judgment by means of them upon it—that is, the reality uniting the levels judges them according to whatever rulings (aḥkām) it confers, just as the Real (al-Ḥaqq) judges the entities (aʿyān) according to whatever states (aḥwāl) He confers upon them. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

Ibn Turka

that is, the totality – which is the shadow of absoluteness – takes that single entity by virtue of numerical oneness – named "two" and "three" – from the Unseen of absolute essential Oneness, and makes it an independent entitative reality, like a differentia; for even though the differentia is extrinsic to the single reality by virtue of generic unity, it is nevertheless what actualizes it and makes it an entitative reality. So the relational totality must be considered within the single entity, and that totality must be established for it. (He, may God be pleased with him, says:) that is, that totality manifests that reality which is named, taken

i.e., it speaks by means of that single entity, the bāʾ being connective (from it) i.e., its speech begins from this single entity, (and by the ruling of) the plurality (by means of it) i.e., by means of this single entity (concerning it) i.e., concerning this single entity. So if what is taken is a single entity, and the speaking is by means of it, and from it, and the ruling is by means of it concerning it, then there is nothing in any level external to it; the single entity is thus both subject and predicate in every level. The subject is identical with the predicate and the predicate identical with the subject. So whatever is predicated with two, three, four, and onward without end is nothing but a single entity, which is named by the names of the originated things according to the levels. This is the saying of al-Kharrāz: the single entity is called "one" at one level, "two" at another level, "three" at another level, "four" at another level, and so on at every level. These differing rulings run upon nothing but a single entity

in the intellective form that is perceptual (shuʿūriyya). The complete clarification of this discourse is that the absolute essential oneness (al-waḥda al-iṭlāqiyya al-dhātiyya) is that which appeared from the depth of the Unseen (ghayb) in the form of numerical oneness, proceeding, in its traversal of the distance of those numerical dimensions, toward that First Principle, which the theoretical intellect expresses as 'that which has no limit' (mā lā yatanāhā), when it is incapable of encompassing it by the comprehensive forms (al-ṣuwar al-iḥāṭiyya) by which things are apprehended. That extremity is what is indicated by his saying

Since the indicative (ishʿārī) of the two is prior in external existence - for it is what points to the perceptual (shuʿūrī) - he gave it precedence, expressing it by the term 'speech' (al-qawl), for it is the form through which the perceptual forms come to exist externally. It is thus the intended meaning by which, and from which, all the other intended meanings are resolved. For this reason he undertook the verification of the forms belonging to number with respect to it, saying - may God be pleased with him

Composition has entered into them by virtue of that through which they share commonality — namely, the collection of units — and that through which they are distinguished — namely, the specific form — except for the One, for there is no composition in it, and there is no rank in existence beyond its rule that it is the root and origin of number. For this reason he said "and composition has entered into them" and did not say "for all ranks are composite" — that is, composition entered into them and made them number; and the pronoun in "entered into them" refers to the twenty ranks, so it may also be understood to refer to each rank of number, thus not including the One. That is, there have occurred in this discourse—namely, that every level is a [single] reality—twenty levels: the first is the level of the One that brings number into existence; then the level of two up through nine, making nine; then the level of ten and twenty up through ninety, which are another nine, making eighteen; then the level of hundred and thousand—and upon the rest, composition enters. As for in reality: because its course is only for its two perfections, the essential and the Name-related, the manifestive (ẓuhūrī) one of it and the manifesting (iẕhārī) one, and the completion of its degree is only the ten: 'those are ten complete' [2/196]. And what indicates this among the numerical and digital intimations is that the zero (al-ṣifr), which indicates the degree, is of two kinds: whiteness and blackness - as Shaykh Saʿd al-Dīn al-Ḥamawī, peace of God be upon him, said: 'The zero is a whiteness in which every non-existent thing becomes manifest, and a blackness in which every existent thing is annihilated; and each of the two has a completion: the completion of its whiteness extends to the ten, and the completion of its blackness extends to the thousand. The first is that which intimates the utmost of manifestation (ẕuhūr) and manifesting (iẕhār), whose abode is the perceptual intellect, just as the second is that which intimates the utmost of perception (shuʿūr) and designation (ishʿār), whose abode is the love of oneness (al-ḥubb al-alfī) and passionate love.' Do not be heedless of the intimations enfolded within these expressions by which the two are designated, for they enfold something higher than this, which he made explicit in al-Mafāḥiṣ - let whoever wishes consult it. As for outwardly: because what indicates that in clear Arabic is only twenty terms: ten from one to ten, eight tens of the tens-place, and a hundred and a thousand. As for other than that, from the hundreds-place and thousands-place tens

This is when one looks at its positional compositions and its contrived constructions which the Prophetic Presence brought forth, expressing them with the tongue of his prophethood to the general folk in the verification of the completion of informing and manifesting. But if one looks at the isolated letters of its alphabet and the simple units of its elements, which the tongue of sainthood (walāya) spoke with the folk of specification in the verification of the completion of unveiling and designation, then he has added to them the tens-of-hundreds, and they are completed as twenty-eight. Hence, if you count from them the purely outward ones which have no part in the inward realities, and their names which are the clear signs indicating their realities, you would find them twenty, and the remaining eight are the letters of the inward realities, entering into their designations and expressing their realities: 'and there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight' [69/17]. The summary of this discourse is that although the degree is non-existent in entity by itself, yet the One has no existence in entity except through it, since the One is only realized within one of the two zeros - as is not hidden from one versed in the foundations of principles. So what is established in entity - in reality - is nothing but the degree

That is, you continually affirm, in every level among the levels, the very thing that you negate in another level—as was mentioned regarding the One: that it is not [itself] a number, by the agreement of the majority of arithmeticians, even though it is the very substance of number, since it is that whose repetition brings numbers into existence. Thus there attach to it, in every level of number, multiple particular necessary properties. Likewise we say of every level that it is a collection of units, and we affirm that it is nothing other than an aggregate of units, even though this is negated, in your view, [in the sense] that it is not merely an aggregate of units. The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
