Thirty words to begin with

Before reading the chapter, meet the words it is built from. Each rests on a root with a plain, physical sense; Ibn ʿArabī builds his meaning on it. Learn the picture, then see the word at work in the text.

    ḥaqq (right, the Real)

    حَقٌّ

The root ح ق ق: Ibn Fāris gives a single root sense: the firmness (iḥkām) and soundness (ṣiḥḥa) of a thing. Ḥaqq, the opposite of bāṭil, heads the root.

Ibn ʿArabī plays on ḥaqq as 'due right' and al-Ḥaqq as 'the Real': divine attributes are rightfully the creature's and creaturely attributes rightfully the Real's.

    takhallul (permeation)

    لِتَخَلُّلِهِ

Ibn ʿArabī derives khalīl from takhallul, mutual interpenetration: the friend permeates the divine attributes, or the Real permeates the friend's existence, so each is manifest in the other.
