Only one who is capable of heedlessness is reminded, and only one from whom neglect is possible is alerted.

Ibn ʿAbbād

**Commentary:** He put this forward as a kind of proof for what he had said, namely that abstaining from asking (*ṭalab*) may be part of courtesy (*adab*). That is because asking intimates that overlooking is admissible in Him, so the asking becomes a reminding (*tadhkīr*) of Him. It also hints that neglect might be present on His part, so the asking becomes an alerting (*tanbīh*) of Him. All of that is impossible with respect to the Real (*al-Ḥaqq*), exalted is He.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
