It may be that the knower is ashamed to lay his need before his Master, being content with His will; how then should he not be ashamed to lay it before His creatures?

Ibn ʿAbbād

It has already been stated that part of proper courtesy (*adab*) is to give up seeking and asking of God (exalted is He), finding sufficiency in His will and contentment (*riḍā*) with the portion He apportioned beforehand (*sābiq qismatihi*), and that the gnostics who have realized the truth (*al-ʿārifūn al-muḥaqqiqūn*) feel shame before God (exalted is He) in this. How, then, should they not feel shame before their Master, mighty and majestic is He, when they ask of created beings?

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
