Your obedience does not profit Him, nor does your disobedience harm Him; He has commanded you to this and forbidden you that only because of what returns to you.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The Real (*al-Ḥaqq*), exalted is He, has no need of the works of those who work, for He is transcendent beyond (*munazzah ʿan*) compensations (*aʿwāḍ*) and self-interested aims (*aghrāḍ*). So your obedience does not benefit Him, nor does your disobedience harm Him. He has commanded you and forbidden you only for the benefits and advantages that return to you in the two abodes, and for nothing else. That is by way of a gracious bounty (*tafaḍḍul*) from Him, without any obligation (*ījāb*) being binding upon Him.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
