خَيْرُ الْعِلْمِ مَا كَانَتِ الْخَشْيَةُ مَعَهُ

The best knowledge is that which is accompanied by awe-filled fear [of God].

Ibn ʿAbbād

The best of the sciences is the one that necessarily brings about the presence of fear of God Most High, for God Most High praised the learned (*ʿulamāʾ*) for this quality, saying (mighty is the One who speaks!): "Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear God" [Q 35:28]. So any knowledge not accompanied by fear has no good in it. Indeed, the one who possesses it is not, in reality, called a knower (*ʿālim*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
