Finding the fruits of acts of obedience here and now is glad tidings to those who perform them that a recompense for them awaits in the hereafter. [The printed text repeats ʿājilan, 'here and now'; the sense requires ājilan, 'in the hereafter', which is the standard reading.]

Ibn ʿAbbād

What those who act in obedience to God Most High find in their deeds here and now (*ʿājilan*), whether an increase of faith (*īmān*) and certainty (*yaqīn*), the breathing-in of the fragrant breeze of intimacy (*uns*), the delight of nearness (*qurb*), or the subtle grace of union (*waṣl*), is glad tidings given in advance by God Most High that a recompense for those deeds exists in the abode of the hereafter, [tidings] that they are accepted by God Most High

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
