He has honoured you with three honours. He made you one who remembers Him; and were it not for His bounty, you would not have been worthy to have His remembrance flow upon you. He made you one remembered through Him, since He confirmed His relation to you. And He made you one remembered in His presence, and so He completed His blessing upon you.

Ibn ʿAbbād

God Most High has honoured His believing servant with three marks of honour, in which He gathered for him every source of glory and every praiseworthy quality. The first of them is his being one who remembers Him, in that He caused His remembrance to flow over his heart and his tongue. And whence would he have that, and by what means would he attain it, were it not for the grace of God Most High and His generosity (*karam*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
