My God, if good qualities appear in me, it is by Your bounty, and Yours is the gracious gift upon me; and if evil qualities appear in me, it is by Your justice, and Yours is the decisive argument against me.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The appearance of good qualities in the servant (*ʿabd*), these being the various kinds of acts of obedience (*ṭāʿāt*), good deeds (*ḥasanāt*), and praiseworthy attributes, is a bounty from God Most High, and the favor is His upon him, since he has no entitlement to that. And the appearance of evil qualities from him, these being the sorts of acts of disobedience (*maʿāṣī*), bad deeds (*sayyiʾāt*), and blameworthy traits, is justice from God Most High

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
