اِلٰهِى عَلِّمْنِى مِنْ عِلْمِكَ الْمَخْزُونِ وَصُنِّى بِسِرِّ اسْمِكَ الْمَصُونِ

My God, teach me from Your treasured-up knowledge, and keep me safe through the secret of Your well-kept Name.

On the whole passage · 1 of 1

Ibn ʿAbbād

The attribution of knowledge to God here is an attribution of ennoblement (*iḍāfat tashrīf*). The treasured knowledge (*al-ʿilm al-makhzūn*) is the knowledge from His very presence (*al-ʿilm al-ladunī*), which He has stored away with Himself and has granted only to those singled out from among the friends of God (*awliyāʾ*) … The guarding (*ṣawn*) asked for is His safeguarding him from the gaze of the others (*aghyār*) upon what is disclosed (*yatajallā*) to his heart of the secret of secrets (*sirr al-asrār*).

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
