The prayer and where it comes from

This is a short blessing on the Prophet, often recited by groups, in Arabic-speaking countries as well as Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Who wrote it is not settled. The earliest text we have found is in Ibn Ṣaʿd al-Tilimsānī's Rawḍat al-nisrīn (p. 184). He says Sīdī Ibrāhīm al-Tāzī, the Sufi settled at Wahrān (Oran) who died in Shaʿbān 866 (May 1462), opened a letter to Ibn Ṣaʿd's father with this prayer. Ibn Ṣaʿd does not say al-Tāzī composed it. Yūsuf al-Nabhānī and ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghumārī do call it his.

Some name older figures. Nabhānī (Afḍal al-ṣalawāt, p. 111) quotes Muḥammad Ḥaqqī al-Nāzilī's Khazīnat al-asrār reporting al-Qurṭubī (d. 671) on its virtues. An answer on SeekersGuidance points out that if al-Tāzī compiled it, al-Qurṭubī and Ibn Ḥajar (d. 852), who is cited the same way, could not have spoken of it, and that none of these claims comes with a reference. We have found the report about al-Qurṭubī only in these later books.

The same passage in Nabhānī says the people of the Maghrib call it al-Nāriyya: to seek something or avert a harm, they gather in one sitting and recite it 4,444 times. It gives other counts as well. We pass these on as reports. We have not found who first set that number, or why.

Also known as: al-Ṣalāt al-Tafrījiyya · al-Ṣalāt al-Tāziyya · al-Ṣalāt al-Qurṭubiyya · Sholawat Nariyah · Shalawat Nariyah · Selawat Tafrijiyah · Salât-ı Tefriciye · Salat-ı Nariye · الصلاة التفريجية · الصلاة التازية.

The objections

Not everyone accepts it. IslamQA (no. 7505) calls the occasion, the number 4,444 and the communal recitation contrived, and holds that phrases about meeting needs and relieving distress exaggerate about the Prophet and amount to shirk. Answering a question about fixed counts, the Ḥanafī site MuftiOnline says there is no basis for them. On the other side, SeekersGuidance says the unknown authorship should not deter anyone from reciting it, and an Egyptian press report has a fatwa officer of Dār al-Iftāʾ, Shaykh Muḥammad Wisām, defending it from Qurʾān 33:56, since any wording of blessing is allowed. We have not found a formal fatwa from Dār al-Iftāʾ. We report these views and do not rule between them.

This edition

We read the prayer from page images of Ibn Ṣaʿd's Rawḍat al-nisrīn (p. 184), Nabhānī's Afḍal al-ṣalawāt (no. 63, p. 111) and Shawāhid al-ḥaqq (no. 51, p. 258), and al-Ghumārī's Irshād al-anām (p. 160), and from machine text of other collections. We have read no manuscript.

The form here is the one people recite, with «سيدنا محمد الذي» and the long closing. It is longer than the earliest text we found, which has «على نبي», lacks «وحسن الخواتيم» and «الكريم», and ends at «وعلى آله وصحبه». The notes on each clause mark where they differ.

See the printed pages: Rawḍat al-nisrīn p. 184 · Afḍal al-ṣalawāt p. 111 · Shawāhid al-ḥaqq (p. 258) · Irshād al-anām (p. 160).

The English and the notes are AI, and no person has reviewed them.

The vowelling and Latin reading are AI, made by the grammar. We compared the vowels with the vowelled print of Afḍal al-ṣalawāt and with NU Online, and they agree apart from spelling and «الخواتم».

The Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Türkçe, Français, Español, اردو, فارسی translations are AI too and unreviewed, and need a native speaker's reading.
