The commentators side by side

One passage at a time. Each column is a commentator; each row gathers the comments on the same words, so readings and emphases can be compared.

With regard to the arrival of gracious gifts, people fall into three classes. One rejoices in the gifts, not with respect to the One who bestows them and brings them into being, but because he finds his own enjoyment in them; such a one is among the heedless, and to him applies His saying (exalted is He): "Until, when they rejoiced in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly" [Q 6:44]. Another rejoices in the gifts inasmuch as he witnesses them as a gracious gift from the One who sent them and a blessing from the One who conveyed them; to him applies His saying (exalted is He): "Say: In the bounty of God and in His mercy, in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they amass" [Q 10:58]. And another rejoices in God: neither the outward enjoyment of the gifts nor their inward graciousness occupies him; rather, gazing upon God has occupied him to the exclusion of all else, together with being gathered wholly upon Him, so that he witnesses none but Him; to him applies His saying (exalted is He): "Say: God! Then leave them to play in their idle plunging" [Q 6:91]. God (exalted is He) revealed to David (upon him be blessing and peace): "O David, say to the truthful ones: in Me let them rejoice, and in My remembrance let them take their delight." May God (exalted is He) make our rejoicing, and yours, to be in Him and in His good pleasure; may He make us among those who understand from Him; may He not make us among the heedless; and may He lead us along the path of the God-fearing, by His grace and generosity.

Ibn ʿAbbād

This section contains an exposition of which of people's states (*aḥwāl*) are praiseworthy and which are blameworthy when blessings (*niʿam*) come upon them and joy (*faraḥ*) arises in them at that moment, and on this rests the question of which [joy] amounts to gratitude (*shukr*) for those blessings and which does not … by this their station of utter truthfulness (*ṣiddīqiyya*) was made real, and upon the elevation of their rank above those beneath them. It is related that ʿUtba al-Ghulām came in one day to Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya, may God be pleased with her, wearing a new shirt and swaggering in his gait, contrary to his former habit … This is a fine supplication, in keeping with the sense of what has gone before. It is plain and needs no elucidation or remark. So may God Most High make that a reality for us by His bounty and beneficence; truly He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
