My God, I am the poor one even in my wealth; how then should I not be poor in my poverty? My God, I am the ignorant one even in my knowledge; how then should I not be utterly ignorant in my ignorance?

Ibn ʿAbbād

The servant is characterized by attributes of deficiency (*naqṣ*), and these are essential (*dhātiyya*) to him. The perfection (*kamāl*) that befalls him as an accident (*ʿāriḍ*) and is ascribed to him is, in verified truth (*ʿalā l-taḥqīq*), deficiency. For this reason, what the author (may God Most High have mercy on him) said is sound and correct: that he is poor (*faqīr*) in his wealth (*ghinā*) and ignorant (*jāhil*) in his knowledge (*ʿilm*).

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
