Textual notes: the Prayer of Ibn Mashīsh

Status and base

Our text is a working text for reading, not a critical edition. It collates modern prints, commentaries, four recordings and web copies; no manuscript of the prayer was read. Witnesses were read on 2026-11-03.

The base is Ibn Kīrān (B): the prayer as quoted in the editor's introduction (printed pp. 5 to 6), read from page images. Where Ibn Kīrān's own lemmas in the same book (BL) and the other witnesses show that the quotation dropped words, the lemma is followed (lines 23 and 29); where they agree against B, they are followed (line 24). Vowels are kept only where B prints them. The order of authority is: the base and its lemmas; the second printed commentary (T, al-Timsamānī); the recordings and web copies, which can show a reading but can only confirm a text, never fix one. Clause breaks follow Ibn Kīrān's lemma divisions, merged where a lemma is one sentence; al-Timsamānī's own list of 21 lines is coarser.

Lines 37 to 39 are in Ibn Kīrān's introduction and al-Timsamānī's commentary but are not lemmas of Ibn Kīrān's commentary: they look like a recited conclusion that travels with the prayer. The audio witnesses are machine transcripts; where this page says a recording “has” a reading, it means the transcript does.

Witnesses

Readings, line by line

Only the lines where some witness differs, adds something or needs a remark. Witness letters link to the table above. Lines not listed had no variant among the witnesses that cover them.

Line 1 · 1 Opening blessing

  • attested as printed; TR transcript lacks lines 1-4; TE precedes the prayer with taʿawwudh, basmala and the ṣalāt verse «إن الله وملائكته…» · B, BL, T, TL, IM, TE, SO, NB, WN, WI, WS · [v]/[asr]/[web]
TE addition is a framing, not part of the matn. Ibn ʿĀbidīn (in B's intro) quotes this as the prayer's opening; he says it is spelt with bā' or mīm in the name (Bashīsh/Mashīsh), B p.6 [v].

Line 3 · 1 Opening blessing

B, BL, T, IM, TE, SO, NB, WN · [v]/[asr]/[web]
B's table of contents has the lemma «وفيه ارتقت الحقائق» (p.46 area) and a separate heading «المراد بالارتقاء في قوله ارتقت» (p.83): Ibn Kīrān glosses the verb.

Line 5 · 1 Opening blessing

  • no variant in the words attested; SO has garbled «لاعق» [asr unclear] · B, BL, T, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB, WN · [v]/[asr]

Line 7 · 2 Light and secrets

  • B prints «أنواره» unvowelled; T and WN vowel «أنوارِه» · B, T, WN · [v]/[web]

Line 8 · 3 The intermediary

[asr unclear] · IM · [asr]
probably a misheard «به منوط»; not counted as a reading

Line 9 · 3 The intermediary

  • لذهب كما قيل الموسوط (with «كما قيل») · B, BL, T, TL, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB, WN, WI, WH · [v] B, BL (vowelled lemma «لَذَهَبَ كَمَا قِيلَ الْمَوْسُوطُ», p.142), T; [OCR] TL (lines 991, 1420, 2410); [asr] recordings; [web]
Every witness read in this sweep, print, commentary, recording or web, has «كما قيل». I met no witness with «لذهب الموسوط» alone. The earlier note that web copies lack «كما قيل» is NOT borne out by the web copies read here (WN, WI, WH, WS all have it). Source of the shorter form [check].
  • لذهب الموسوط (without «كما قيل») · · not found
    see above

Line 10 · 3 The intermediary

  • present · B, T, TL, TE, SO, TR, WN, WI, WH, WS · [v]/[asr]/[web]
in B this belongs to the lemma «ولا شيء…» (BL p.142 lemma stops at «الموسوط»; ToC lists «صلاة تليق بك منك إليه كما هو أهله» as its own lemma, p.169)
  • not heard in transcript between «الموسوط» and «اللهم إنه سرك» · IM · [asr]
IM transcript jumps straight from «الموسوط» to «اللهم إنه سرك»; could be a real omission in the Āla setting or a Whisper drop. Listen [check].

Line 11 · 4 Secret and veil

  • ToC splits this lemma: «اللهم إنه سرك», «الجامع», «الدال» · BL · [v]
Ibn Kīrān glosses it word by word (pp.174-176)

Line 12 · 4 Secret and veil

  • ToC splits: «وحجابك», «الأعظم», «القائم», «لك», «بين يديك» · BL · [v]
    pp.176-180

Line 13 · 5 Plea

  • SO, TR variants garbled «بنسبي» [asr unclear] · SO · [asr]

Line 15 · 5 Plea

  • B prints «وعرِّفني» with shadda; T «وعرِّفني»; WN same · B, T, WN · [v]/[web]
«أسلَمُ» (first-person indicative) in the web vowelling WN; B and T leave it unvowelled or ambiguous

Line 19 · 5 Plea

  • TE «وقف بي», IM «وقذف بي», NB garbled · TE, IM, NB · [asr unclear]
    Whisper errors; not variants

Line 22 · 5 Plea

  • SO, IM garbled «بحار الوحدات» [asr unclear] · SO, IM · [asr]

Line 23 · 5 Plea

· BL, T, TL, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB, WN, WI, WH · [v] BL lemma p.202 (vowelled «أَجِدَ … أُحِسَّ»), T; [OCR] TL; [asr]; [web]
Ibn Kīrān's own lemma has «ولا أجد». His ToC (p.202) also has it. Al-Timsamānī's list numbers it as one line. Every recording has it.
(without «ولا أجد») · B · [v]
the matn as quoted in the editor's introduction (p.5, last-but-three line) omits «ولا أجد»: an outlier inside the same book, probably an omission in the introduction's quotation. Established text follows BL.
  • Ibn Kīrān on the passage: «هذه غاية الإغراق المذكور وهو الغيبة عن الأكوان بشهود المكون فيها» · BL · [v]
p.202; he reads the four negations as one limit of immersion, quoting «ألاحظه في كل شيء رأيته…» and «إذا كنت من تهواه في الحسن واحداً»

Line 24 · 5 Plea

(no «اللهم») · BL, T, TL, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB, WI, WH · [v] BL ToC, T; [OCR] TL; [asr]; [web]
ToC p.204 and T print the lemma without «اللهم»; all recordings are heard without it (SO «الحجب»).
· B, WN · [v] B; [web] WN
B (editor's intro) and the NU Online page insert «اللهم». Established text omits it, with a note.

Line 26 · 5 Plea

  • «بتحقيق الحق الأول» attached to this line · B, T, TR, NB, WN · [v]/[asr]
BL ToC has «وحقيقته جامع عوالمي» (p.209) and «بتحقيق الحق الأول» (p.209) as two lemmas; T's numbered list (pdf p.12) writes «وحقيقته جامع عوالمي بتحقيق الحق الأول» as one line. IM: «لتحقيق» [asr, probably a mishearing]. TL gives two readings of the «باء» (instrumental, or oath: «أقسم عليك يا رب بتحقيق الحق الأول»), OCR.

Line 27 · 6 Closing invocations

  • no variant; NB repeats the line twice [asr] · NB · [asr]

Line 28 · 6 Closing invocations

  • …بما سمعت به نداء عبدك زكريا (without «عليه السلام») · BL, T, TL, TR, SO, NB, WI, WH · [v] BL ToC p.214 and T; [OCR]; [asr]; [web]
ToC of Ibn Kīrān prints the lemma ending «زكريا»; T ends «زكرياء»
  • …زكريا عليه السلام · B, IM, TE · [v] B; [asr] IM, TE
    B's intro and two Moroccan-register recordings add «
NU Online (Nabhānī-derived per Sonora): the «به» is missing; every other witness has it

Line 29 · 6 Closing invocations

  • present · BL, T, TL, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB, WN, WI, WH · [v] BL lemma p.216 (boxed, vowelled «وَانْصُرْنِي بِكَ لَكَ»), T; [OCR]; [asr]; [web]
Ibn Kīrān glosses it at length (p.216: seeking help from God Himself, not through intermediaries, «
  • absent · B · [v]
B's introductory quotation goes «زكريا عليه السلام، وأيدني بك لك». Contradicted by Ibn Kīrān's own lemma in the same book. Established text includes the line.

Line 30 · 6 Closing invocations

  • no variant · B, BL, T, TE, IM, SO, NB, TR, WN · [v]/[asr]/[web]
SO and NB repeat the group «وانصرني…وحل بيني وبين غيرك» two or three times [asr]

Line 31 · 6 Closing invocations

  • TE «وجمع» [asr unclear] · TE · [asr unclear]

Line 33 · 6 Closing invocations

  • three times; more in some performances · B, BL, T, TE, TR, WN · [v]/[asr]/[web]
IM and SO: four [asr, the fourth may be a misheard «إن»]; NB: a long run of the name, about nineteen times [asr]. Ibn Kīrān has a section «مراتب الفناء في الله تعالى» (p.234) and «مطلب في ذكر اسم الجلالة مفرداً» (p.238); T's commentary says it is three because the ranks are three [OCR].

Line 34 · 6 Closing invocations

{إن الذي فرض عليك القرآن لرادك إلى معاد}

  • Qur'ān 28:85, printed in B and T as «لرادك» · B, T, IM, TE, SO, TR, NB · [v]/[asr]
BL ToC: «إن الذي فرض عليك القرآن لرادك إلى معاد» p.241. WN and WI print the verse; WI vowels «لَرَادُّكَ».

Line 35 · 6 Closing invocations

{ربنا آتنا من لدنك رحمة وهيئ لنا من أمرنا رشدا}

  • once (written text) · B, BL, T, WN, WI · [v]/[web]
    Qur'ān 18:10; Ibn Kīrān p.250 «
  • sung three times · IM, TE · [asr]
    repetition in performance
  • repeated several times, with garbling · SO, NB · [asr unclear]
NB adds a line that sounds like «ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب النار» (2:201) [asr, garbled: «يا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وفينا وذاب النار»]; unclear.

Line 36 · 7 Doxology

{إن الله وملائكته يصلون على النبي يا أيها الذين آمنوا صلوا عليه وسلموا تسليما}

  • present at the end of the prayer · B, BL, TL, IM, TR, WN, WI · [v] B; [OCR] TL; [asr]; [web]
Ibn Kīrān's commentary ends on this verse (ToC p.256; last page p.259, glossing «وسلموا تسليماً»): he gives no lemma for lines 37-39.
  • absent from the printed matn · T · [v]
T's printed matn goes from «ربنا آتنا…رشدا» straight to «سبحان ربك»; but T's commentary glosses the verse and the formula that follows, saying he closed with it «تيمناً وتبركاً» [OCR].
  • sung first, before the prayer (after taʿawwudh and basmala) · TE · [asr]

Line 37 · 7 Doxology

  • present · B, TL, SO, NB · [v] B; [OCR] TL; [asr]
T's commentary reads «ورحماته»; B reads «ورحمته». B p.6, third from last lines. Editor's remark (p.7): some great Shādhilī shaykhs added «زيادات شريفة» to the prayer and made it a daily wird; al-Nakhlī says it is read once after Fajr and after Maghrib [v].

Line 38 · 7 Doxology

B is the only witness read with «الله»
TL, SO, NB · [OCR] TL (twice); [asr] SO, NB
al-Timsamānī's commentary writes «وكلمات ربنا التامات المباركات» (without «عدد» second time in the OCR); SO and NB sing «وعدد كلمة ربنا» [asr]. The «ربنا» wording is the Malay-performed and Timsamānī form; «الله» is B. Treat as a real variant [check against more prints].

Line 39 · 7 Doxology

{سبحان ربك رب العزة عما يصفون وسلام على المرسلين والحمد لله رب العالمين}

  • present (Ṣāffāt 37:180-182) · B, T, TL, TE, SO, NB · [v] B, T; [OCR] TL; [asr]
T's commentary cites ʿAlī: whoever wants the fullest measure of reward should make this his last words; it is the «خاتمة الصافات» [OCR]. SO sings it three times and adds «…
  • absent (performance ends at the ṣalāt verse) · IM, TR · [asr]

What each tradition adds or omits

  • Moroccan, ʿImrānī (Āla): whole prayer from line 1; after «الموسوط» the transcript goes straight to «اللهم إنه سرك» (line 10 not heard, [check]); adds «عليه السلام» after «زكريا»; sings the Qur'ānic «ربنا آتنا» three times; ends with the ṣalāt verse, with no formula and no Ṣāffāt doxology [asr].
  • Moroccan/Anglophone, Temsamani: opens with taʿawwudh, basmala and the ṣalāt verse; no ṣalāt verse at the end and no «صلوات الله وسلامه» formula; closes with the Ṣāffāt doxology; sings «ربنا آتنا» three times [asr].
  • Malay (Sodeeq, Banjari): repeat the cluster «وانصرني بك لك…وحل بيني وبين غيرك» two or three times; long runs of «الله» (about 19 in NB); the ṣalāt formula and the Ṣāffāt doxology are both sung (the doxology three times in SO), with «كلمات ربنا»; SO adds invocations «… يا حبيب الله» and NB seems to add 2:201 [asr, garbled]. No ṣalāt verse heard at the end of SO [asr].
  • Turkish (Lâlegül): sung text from line 5; to the ṣalāt verse; no doxology. Its spoken Turkish commentary was not transcribed [asr].
  • Indonesian/Turkish web copies (WN, WI): text to the ṣalāt verse only; WN omits «به» in «بما سمعت به».
  • Printed commentaries: Ibn Kīrān (B) has «ولا أجد» and «وانصرني بك لك» in the lemmas and ends at the ṣalāt verse; al-Timsamānī's printed matn ends at «سبحان ربك…» (no ṣalāt verse, no formula) but his commentary adds both.

The commentators on readings

  • Ibn Kīrān on «كما قيل الموسوط»: on the page read (printed pp.142-143, pdf spread 72) he does not comment on «كما قيل». He glosses the sentence: it generalises over everything, human, jinn, angel, animal, mineral, above and below, all tied to the Prophet; he is the wāsiṭa in the two blessings, existence and support; without him «لانعدمت دعائمه» [v]. The surrounding pages deal with the Prophet's life after death («حياته صلى الله عليه وسلم», p.142).
  • al-Timsamānī, same phrase: «(لذهب) أي لفقد ولم يوجد…» and «والمراد بالموسوط كل موجود» (OCR lines ~2410-2421); he reads «الواسطة» as the Prophet's mediation of the gift of being and then supports it with the hadith «لولاه ما خلقت السماوات ولا الأرض» [OCR].
  • al-Timsamānī on «انشقت/انفلقت»: a stylistic variation to avoid heaviness, «تفنن؛ دفعاً للثقل» [OCR, line ~3030].
  • Ibn Kīrān on the four negations: see line 23. On «وانصرني بك لك»: see line 29.

Open [check] items

  1. Where does «لذهب الموسوط» (without «كما قيل») come from? Not found in any witness here.
  2. «كلمات الله» (B) vs «كلمات ربنا» (TL, SO, NB): see more prints.
  3. Is IM's omission of line 10 real? Listen.
  4. Ibn ʿAjība (BULAC MS.ARA.1927) not read; leaf n361 did not look like a lemma page; full-resolution images needed.
  5. Moroccan and Egyptian/Levantine circulation texts not found; Qalamos/Leipzig/Berlin manuscripts not opened.
  6. Colophon of the commentary in T (Shaʿbān 1239) and the attribution to al-Ḥamūmī vs al-Timsamānī.
  7. Ibn Kīrān's lemma pages read in full only at pp.29, 142, 202, 216; the others are via the table of contents. Re-read any lemma before quoting it as vowelled.
  8. B's remaining unread pages: Ibn Kīrān's facsimile of his own manuscript (printed p.25, pdf spreads 13-14, rendered but not read): it could give a manuscript reading of the lemmas.
  9. Whisper transcripts are in audio/*.srt; the audio itself was deleted.
