About this text
  1. Mawqif 101 · “Glory be to Him who carried His servant”

    See the print: Damascus 1966, p. 219, Damascus 1966, p. 220, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 218, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 219 (archive.org)

    He, exalted, said: "Glory be to Him who carried His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We might show him some of Our signs; truly he is the Hearing, the Seeing" (Q 17:1).

    In this verse He, exalted, informed that He carried His servant Muhammad by night, with his body and his spirit;

    so as to show him some of the signs of the horizons, after He had shown him His signs in his own self, as He, exalted, said: "We shall show them Our signs on the horizons and in their own selves" (Q 41:53).

    until it becomes clear to them that what they have seen is the Real and nothing else.

    This is the state of the sought, the drawn, the chosen: He shows them the signs of the selves before the signs of the horizons, unlike the seekers.

    Then He, exalted, informed that he, that is, Muhammad, is "the Hearing, the Seeing", faʿīl in the sense of mafʿūl,

    that is: everything that Muhammad saw and heard in his night journey is Muhammad, in respect of his reality,

    for it is the prime matter of the world and the Reality of realities,

    and he is the pre-eternal Man; he is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward, and he has knowledge of all things, just as the Real, exalted, has these attributes.

    For when God, exalted, brought his reality into existence, He said to him: "I have given you My names and My attributes; so whoever sees you sees Me, whoever knows you knows Me, and whoever is ignorant of you is ignorant of Me.

    The utmost of those below you is to arrive at knowledge of their own selves from you, and the utmost of their knowledge of you is knowledge of your existence, not of your how; and likewise you, with Me, do not know Me except in respect of existence."

    So the reality of Muhammad is what is beheld by the people of beholding;

    it is what they court in their love-poetry, and in whose talk they delight in their night conversations;

    it is what they mean by Laylā and Salmā;

    it is what they allude to by wine, by drinking and the cup, and by fire, light and the sun, and by lightning, the breeze of the east wind, the encampments, the traces and the hills;

    it is the end of the journey of the wayfarers and the goal of what the knowers seek.

    After I had written this mawqif, it occurred to me that if someone to whom the secret of the Muhammadan Reality has not been unveiled came upon it, he might say what al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Taymiyya, God's mercy be upon him, said when he came upon the Shifāʾ of ʿIyāḍ: "This little Maghribī has gone to excess!"

    Then I slept, and it was said to me in a dream: "Add!"

    And it is the fire of Moses and the staff of Moses, and the breath of Jesus, by which he used to bring the dead to life and heal the one born blind and the leper.

    When I woke, I added it.
