المواقف

al-Amīr ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jazāʾirī (1222–1300/1808–1883)

The Emir's Book of Halts, a reading path of 15 of its 372 mawāqif, "The Emir's halts: law and light": the Law and the light of the Book, the two seas and the knower between them, mercy, the one God of every creed, war and the soul, prayer, and one dream (an excerpt). The vowelling and the English are AI work, not yet reviewed by a person.

✦ Vowels, roots and English: AI; not reviewed by a person. For three of the fifteen (7, 30 and 246) the English was compared with the one English translation held, and where they differ a “Translators differ” note says so; for the other twelve no translation is held, so the English has not been checked against any specialist translation.

The book’s own title, given by the Emir, is Kitāb al-Mawāqif fī baʿḍ ishārāt al-Qurʾān ilā l-asrār wa-l-maʿārif (كتاب المواقف في بعض إشارات القرآن إلى الأسرار والمعارف), as Taleb (2023) has it from the critical edition; the Damascus 1966 edition we read prints the older title Kitāb al-Mawāqif fī l-waʿẓ wa-l-irshād. Usually called the Kitāb al-Mawāqif (“Book of Halts”), it is a book of 372 short stations, each usually opening on a Qurʾān verse or a ḥadīth and giving what the Emir says was disclosed to him about it. It is Akbarian in doctrine and, in Weismann’s description, “highly associative” in style and modelled on the Futūḥāt. This text is a reading path of 15 of the 372, in an order chosen by the editor (“The Emir’s halts: law and light”): Mawqif 20, 75, 6 and 7, 30, 29, 31, 219, 218, 246, 73, 204, 76, 179, 203, and an excerpt of 346 (the lion dream). Each mawqif is its own section with links to its pages in the print. The others are not in the reader yet.

Editions: the first printing is given as Cairo, Maṭbaʿat al-Shabāb, 1328–29/1910–11, three volumes (Weismann; probable, not confirmed independently). We read the Damascus edition of Dār al-Yaqẓa al-ʿArabiyya (1966), which Lagarde used as the base of his complete French translation (Brill, 2000–02), and collated a Cairo reprint of c. 1925–26. In English only a selection of 39 texts exists (The Spiritual Writings of Amir ʿAbd al-Kader, SUNY 1995).

Authorship: scholars accept the Emir as author, but describe the book as partly dictated or compiled, with his Damascus disciples al-Khānī, al-Ṭanṭāwī and al-Bayṭār recording and prompting; an Arabic reply by ʿAbd al-Bāqī Miftāḥ shows that the attribution was once contested (the reply itself not yet seen: UNVERIFIED). Collated unit by unit with D by script and, where the consonants differ, by an Opus adjudication of both page images; Mawqif 75 was collated by hand (no consonantal variant, fourteen smaller differences, docs/texts/mawaqif-75.md §3). The other records (docs/texts/mawaqif-*.md, listed in mawaqif-path.md) hold each unit's differing readings and what was adopted. It carries almost no vowel marks.

  • Taleb describes the Mawāqif as an esoteric commentary of the allusive kind (tafsīr bi-l-ishāra) on the Qurʾān: about two thirds comments on chosen verses or sūras and on ḥadīth, and about one third on the works of Ibn ʿArabī and other Sufis.

“Two third of the Mawāqif consists of a scriptural commentary”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, p. 15 summary by AI

  • Taleb says the book's own title, given by the Emir, is Kitāb al-Mawāqif fī baʿḍ ishārāt al-Qurʾān ilā l-asrār wa-l-maʿārif, and that scholars who have not consulted the critical edition kept the outdated title of the Damascus 1966 edition (Kitāb al-Mawāqif fī al-waʿẓ wa-l-irshād).

    “outdated title”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, p. 15 n. 28 summary by AI

  • Taleb holds that the first critical edition is Bakrī ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn's (Damascus, Nīnawā, 2014, 3 vols), based on 20 manuscripts, filling lacunae of earlier editions and giving a chronology of the chapters between 1848 and 1883. He also says the edition of ʿAbd al-Bāqī Miftāḥ (Algiers, Dār al-Hudā) is overlooked by scholars.

    “20 existing manuscripts”

    Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, p. 15 n. 30; p. 7 n. 13 summary by AI

  • Taleb says many parts of the Mawāqif were taken down by leading Sufi scholars of the Emir's Damascus circle, and names its core: Muḥammad al-Khānī (d. 1862), ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Bayṭār (d. 1916), Muḥammad al-Ṭanṭāwī (d. 1882), Muḥammad al-Ṭayyib (d. 1896) and Muḥammad al-Mubārak (d. 1912).

    “transcribed by key Sufi scholars”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, pp. 15–16 summary by AI

  • Against Woerner-Powell's description of the book as a pile of unordered lecture notes, Taleb grants that some chapters were taken down orally but says many were written by the Emir himself as complete chapters over a long period, and that the book has a doctrinal unity beneath its loose form. On the attribution question, then, Taleb accepts the Emir as author while allowing for dictation.

    “some chapters were transcribed orally”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, pp. 22–23 summary by AI

  • Taleb notes that the Tuḥfat al-zāʾir, is the only biography that includes his intellectual and spiritual life and that it names the Mawāqif as his work. This is the early attestation of the attribution.

    “explicitly attributes the Kitāb al-Mawāqif”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, p. 6 summary by AI

  • Weismann treats the Emir as the author of the Mawāqif and sees in it the record of his last three decades of spiritual experience. He sees the stations as felt by the Emir as direct inspiration, written in an associative language modelled on Ibn ʿArabī's Futūḥāt, and as including explanations of hard points in Ibn ʿArabī prompted by disciples' questions.

    “highly associative language”

Itzchak Weismann, p. 59 summary by AI

  • Weismann's note gives the book as three volumes, Cairo, 1328–29/1910–11, under the title Kitāb al-Mawāqif fī al-waʿẓ wa-l-irshād. This is the only dating of the first printing we have read in a scholarly source.

    “Cairo, 1328–29/1910–11”

    Itzchak Weismann, p. 59 n. 9 summary by AI

  • Taleb faults Woerner-Powell (2017) for not consulting the Bakrī critical edition, which he says would have filled gaps in his knowledge of the book's structure and doctrinal sources; he disputes Woerner-Powell's rendering of one passage and his view of the book as unsystematic.

    “did not consult this edition”

Lahouari Ramzi Taleb, p. 23 summary by AI

How it is shown

  • One text, one section per mawqif (heading "Mawqif N · short title", its own "See the print" links to the archive.org page images of D (item 1966_20230113_202301) and C (1_20230115, vol. 3 3_20230115: item id inferred from the vol. 1 pattern, exists on archive.org, vol. 3 content not re-checked here); page n = PDF page − 1).
  • Neutral context notes (shown, not part of the translation) for 73, 219 and 246 come from the "Sensitive framing" flags of their .ai.json; the translations are untouched.
  • "* * *" (D's section mark, at the end of 31) is not part of the text and is dropped.
  • Word analysis: CAMeL (as for 75); Qurʾān quotations found by scripts/quran_refs.py (the nine of Mawqif 75 verified by hand, record §5).

Change log

  • 2026-10-21: the 14 further units added to the reader beside Mawqif 75; book title corrected to the Emir's own (Taleb), the 1966 title noted as the edition's.

2026-10-22: PUBLISHED: the reading path (15 units) is public at /read/mawaqif (removed from HIDDEN_TEXTS, HIDDEN_LIBRARY, HIDDEN_CATALOGUE and quran_refs HIDDEN_IDS). Only the path is loaded by the reader; the 357 full-text files and 179 AI drafts under data/sources/mawaqif/full/ are not. Qurʾān refs: 3 review corrections now persist in scripts/quran_refs_overrides.json, plus 13 explicit verbatim quotations added (5:32 in 204; 1:3, 1:4, 1:5 in 203; 2:45 in 179; 89:27, 89:30, 9:128 in 219; 2:187, 2:229 in 218). Chodkiewicz (SUNY 1995) is listed as a held translation (copyrighted-cited); its comparison for 7, 30 and 246 shows as “Translators differ” notes. Decisions of 2026-10-22 recorded in the unit records (75, 30, 246, 73, 219).
