قَالَ الْحَقُّ- تَعَالَى- لِبَعْضِ عَبِيدِهِ: أَتَزْعُمُ مَحَبَّتِي؟
The Real (exalted is He) said to one of His servants: "Do you claim love for Me?"
وَاِنْ كَانَتْ؛ فَمَا هِيَ اِلاَّ نَتِيجَةٌ عَنْ مَحَبَّتِي لَكَ.
"And if it exists, it is nothing but a result of My love for you."
فَأَنْتَ أَحْبَبْتَ مَوْجُوداً، وَأَنَا أَحْبَبْتُكَ مَعْدُوماً،
"For you loved Me as an existent, while I loved you when you were non-existent."
ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: وَتَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ تَطْلُبُ الْقُرْبَ مِنِّي، وَالِانْحِيَاشَ اِلَيَّ؟
Then He said to him: "And you claim that you seek nearness to Me, and to draw yourself towards Me?"
وَأَنَا أَشَدُّ طَلَباً لَكَ مِنْكَ،
"Yet I seek you more intensely than you seek Me."
طَلَبْتُكَ لِحُضُورِي مِنْ غَيْرِ وَاسِطَةٍ يَوْمَ «اَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ» وَكُنْتَ رُوحاً،
"I sought you for My presence without intermediary on the day of "Am I not your Lord?" (Q 7:172), when you were a spirit."
ثُمَّ نَسِيتَ؛ فَطَلَبْتُكَ بِاِرْسَالِ الرُّسُلِ بَعْدَ أَنْ صِرْتَ جِسْماً،
"Then you forgot, so I sought you by sending the messengers, after you had become a body."
كُلُّ هَذَا مَحَبَّةٌ فِيكَ لَكَ، لَا لِي،
"All of this is love for you, for your sake, not for Mine."
ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ كُنْتَ فِي أَشَدِّ مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ الْجُوعِ وَالْعَطَشِ وَالتَّعَبِ، وَدَعَوْتُكَ لِي، فَتَعَرَّضَتْ لَكَ الْجَنَّةُ، بِحُورِهَا وَقُصُورِهَا وَأَنْهَارِهَا وَثِمَارِهَا وَغِلْمَانِهَا وَوِلْدَانِهَا، بَعْدَ أَنْ أَعْلَمْتُكَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَجِدُ عِنْدِي شَيْئاً مِنْ ذَلِكَ، مَاذَا كُنْتَ فَاعِلًا؟
Then He said to him: "Tell Me: if you were in the most extreme state of hunger, thirst and weariness, and I called you to Myself, and the Garden presented itself to you with its houris, its palaces, its rivers, its fruits, its pages and its youths, after I had let you know that you would find nothing of that with Me, what would you do?"
فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ.
He said to Him: "I seek refuge in You from You."
