God Most High said: “Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of God” (Q 13:28).

“In the remembrance of God”: the wāw [n. 1] is the wāw of circumstance, and a circumstantial clause is a restriction on the one it qualifies, serving to exclude those who remember God while their hearts do not find rest in remembering Him; these are the wrongdoers, the disobedient.

His remembrance, exalted is He, runs on their tongues without presence and without reverence for Him, exalted is He.

God Most High said, in one of the divine reports to one of His prophets: “Say to the wrongdoers: let them not remember Me, for if they remember Me, I remember them with cursing.” Or as He said.

So His words “and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of God” (Q 13:28) are a description of “whoever turns in penitence”, meaning everyone who bears this description; and that turning is the return from creation to the self, and from the self to the Real, exalted is He.

And this is a special faith: that is, they believed and assented that He, exalted is He, remembers them when they remember Him, because of His words, Most High: “So remember Me; I will remember you” (Q 2:152) [n. 2].

And because of His words: “If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself”, the ḥadīth in full.

These, then, are the ones whose hearts find rest, and find intimacy and stillness from the pain of yearning, the burning of love and its restlessness, through God's remembering them, not through their remembering Him.

Then He, Most High, made it known that rest is not rightly had, nor are stillness and intimacy fitting, except through God's remembrance, exalted is He, of His servant.

For it is the supreme distinction and the rank of nearness, as He, Most High, said: “And the remembrance of God is greater” (Q 29:45).

That is, God's remembrance, Most High, of His servant is greater and mightier than the servant's remembrance of his Lord in his prayer and the rest of his acts of drawing near, inasmuch as that is the soundest proof of nearness and acceptance.
