He, exalted is He, says: “In houses which God has permitted to be raised and His name to be remembered in them, there glorify Him, in the mornings and the evenings, men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from the remembrance of God” (Q 24:36–37).
He singled out men for mention, and not women, only because He, exalted is He, mentioned the mornings and the evenings, and that is an allusion to keeping constantly to the mosques at these two times,
and this does not, as a rule, come from women; and the rare case is of no account and has no legal bearing.
And His words: “whom trade does not distract” (Q 24:37).
Trade is more general than selling and buying.
One says, “So-and-so trades in such-and-such,” while he is sitting in his house, for example, in the sense that his selling and buying, when he sells and buys, takes place in it [the house];
and he may be in his shop or his market, intending to sell and buy, without any actual selling or buying having come about from him.
So in this state, and in the state of actually being engaged in selling and buying, he is not distracted from the remembrance of God.
What is meant is not specifically remembrance of the tongue; what is meant is that their movements and their moments of rest were for God, and in God, and by God.
Thus they had presence with God, exalted is He, and vigilance, and a sound intention, while selling, buying and trading and in all their dealings;
and that is what is meant by His words, exalted is He: “and those who are constant in their prayer” (Q 70:23).
That is, in all their states and dealings they are present with God, exalted is He, and vigilant towards Him, just as they are present with Him and vigilant towards Him while they are in their prayer.
For it is known that they had necessities which they could not avoid attending to;
that is why He said, “whom neither trade nor sale distracts” (Q 24:37), and did not say, “they do not trade and do not sell.”
And in the Ṣaḥīḥ, from ʿĀʾisha, may God be pleased with her, who said: “The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to remember God, exalted is He, at all his times,” that is, in all his states and moments.
What is meant is that he was constantly present with God and vigilant towards Him.
For it is plain that he, upon him be blessing and peace, used to eat, drink and sleep, and to attend to the affairs of his household and the affairs of others besides them, of all kinds of creatures.
