God Most High has said: “You will never be able to be just between women, even if you are eager to; so do not incline with all inclining” (Q 4:129).
Everyone of whom justice is demanded between two mutually opposed things, such that pleasing one of them is angering the other and bringing joy to one of them is grieving the other, when the two stand at opposite extremes, so that nothing pleases the one but angering the other, nothing gladdens the one but grieving the other, and the flourishing of the one comes about only through the ruin of the other.
and in proportion to his nearness to one of them he is far from the other, a demand from which there is no escape and no flight: then those two things are “women” with respect to him, in the sense of two opposed spouses, such as the soul and the spirit, and this world and the next.
For if you give the soul its aims, follow its appetites and give it hold of its natural desires, you please it and anger the spirit.
For natural things and the appetites of the soul harm the spirit, blacken its face, eclipse its sun, keep knowledges from reaching it, and veil the lights and the secrets from it.
And if you please the spirit by practising spiritual things and by departing from the states of bodily nature, you anger the soul.
How could it be otherwise, when it is the spirit’s mount, on which it reaches its aims and obtains its desires? And whatever strengthens the spirit weakens the soul, and the reverse.
Likewise this world and the next: whenever you turn toward one of them you turn away from the other, and whenever you strive to build up one of them you lay waste the other.
You will never be able to please all of them, as God Most High has told, even if you spend your utmost effort and exhaust all you have, for uniting two contradictories is impossible.
So the All-Wise, exalted is He, taught us the way out of this difficulty and the remedy for this baffling disease,
namely that we do not incline with all inclining: that is, even if we incline with our hearts to one of them, we do not incline in our outward conduct by wholly abandoning the rights of the one we have inclined away from, nor turn away from its demands and leave it neglected,
since we are commanded to preserve each one of them and to deal gently with both, and we cannot do without either of them.
He (God bless him and grant him peace) used to be just in dividing among his wives, and he would say: “O God, this is my division in what I own; so do not take me to account for what You own and I do not own.”
