God Most High has said: "And when the Qurʾān is recited" (Q 7:204).
by yourselves, or others recite it for you, and this is the subtle point in its being put in the passive: "then listen to it and be silent" (Q 7:204).
on the understanding that you are listening to it from God: for the speech is God's speech, and the one who speaks it is God,
and on the understanding that its hearer is God, for He is the speaker and the hearer from within everyone, whether one knows it or not.
So when the listener is the reciter, he is like one whose soul speaks to him while he listens to its speech.
The one who hears the Qurʾān in this way obeys its commands, is restrained by its restraints, takes admonition from its admonitions and is awakened by its allusions;
and then the mercy shown to this listener is made certain, bound to come about, because "perhaps" from God is binding, as the scholars have said;
but if he hears it in some other way, he does not come under this noble promise, and so there is no certain mercy;
And when the reciter is someone other than the listener, it may be that he hears from him nothing but his melodies, his drawling and the beauty of his voice, and so does not grasp the meanings, let alone what lies beyond them;
and when he himself is the reciter, he may well be among those of whom the Messenger of God (God bless him and grant him peace) said: "Many a reciter is cursed by the Qurʾān."
He says "the curse of God be upon the wrongdoers", "upon the transgressors", "upon the liars", while he is one of them.
So whoever wants to obtain the treasures, let him break the locks, and he will win what lies behind them.
