About this text
  1. Mawqif 185 · “Whoever goes forth as an emigrant to God”

    In brief

    Starting from Q 4:100, “Whoever goes forth from his house as an emigrant to God and His Messenger”, the Emir takes emigration to God as of the heart, a turning from violations, and emigration to the Messenger or his heir as bodily, for guidance. If death overtakes the emigrant, God has bound Himself to the reward, and he is raised among the knowers. Emigration to a guide is obligatory on each person, except those taken by pre-eternal solicitude, for whom “no emigration after the opening” applies.

    See the print: Damascus 1966, p. 407, Damascus 1966, p. 408, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 384, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 385 (archive.org)

    God Most High has said: "Whoever goes forth from his house as an emigrant to God and His Messenger, and then death overtakes him, his reward has fallen upon God" (Q 4:100).

    Emigration to God is of the heart: it is the first foundation, and the matter on which everything rests,

    and it comes about through the arrival of the divine restrainer, and through turning away from the violations of the divine commands that one used to commit;

    Emigration to His Messenger is the second aim, for guidance and for being taught how to travel the paths to the Sought; it is a bodily emigration.

    And just as emigration to the Messenger of God (God bless him and grant him peace) was obligatory before the opening, the opening of Mecca, so today it remains due to the heirs of his states and secrets, who point the way to God Most High and call to knowledge of Him.

    "Then death overtakes him": before he meets the Messenger, or his heir, or before he attains the Sought for whose sake he emigrated;

    "His reward has fallen", that is, it is established, "his reward", that is, his recompense, "upon God": He Most High has made it binding upon Himself as a favour and a grace, and God is possessed of favour towards the worlds.

    So the one who emigrated for the knowledge of God Most High and for nearness to Him is raised up among the number of the knowers of God, and in their lofty stations.

    How many will you see in the hereafter of those who did not attain knowledge of God in this world, and yet have been gathered into the company of the knowers of God Most High and have gained their rank!

    Likewise the one who seeks to memorise the Book of God, and the one who seeks knowledge for the sake of God's face, are raised up among the number of the memorisers and the scholars, and in their stations;

    indeed these have a more complete bliss, for they are not questioned about the bounty that came to them in the hereafter, unlike those to whom it came in this world, for they are questioned about that bliss.

    Emigration to the Messenger or to his heir is obligatory upon every individual,

    except when a pre-eternal solicitude has gone before for the servant, and he is among the desired, and God Most High has had mercy on him through an attraction of the All-Merciful and a lordly snatching, so that he knows himself and so knows his Lord; then emigration falls away from him, as has come in the Ṣaḥīḥ: "There is no emigration after the opening."

    For when the Real raises the servant up, he becomes real (ḥaqq); so no emigration is incumbent on him to seek a guide.

    That is why the Folk (God's good pleasure be upon them) have said: after the opening, the shaykh has over the aspirant only the rank of companionship, brotherhood and consultation, nothing else.

    As for emigration to God, the opening is impossible without it.
