Mawqif 232 · “He loves them and they love Him”
In briefAI
Starting from Q 5:54, “a people whom He loves and who love Him”, the Emir says this is a particular love; in general God loves all creatures and they love Him, since all motion is toward a beloved. His hatred of the sinful and the unbelievers is likewise particular. The initiative passes at times from Him and at times from us. Their love bears obedience; His bears unveiling, so that they find no “other”, as in the ḥadīth “when I love him, I am him.”

He, exalted is He, said: “Then God will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him” (Q 5:54).
This is a particular love from Him, exalted is He, for these people, just as their love for Him, exalted is He, is particular; and His love for them and their love for Him have particular effects, and fruits laid down in the texts;
otherwise, the Real, exalted is He, loves all His creatures, just as all His creatures love Him.
That is because inclination and motion, whether inner or sensory, in every moving thing are only ever towards a beloved.
So He, exalted is He, did not incline to bringing anything into existence, nor move with the inner motion of will, except out of love for that thing.
Likewise every creature loves whoever does it good, and there is no doer of good but He, exalted is He; so it loves God, exalted is He, even if it is not aware of it, and it is called a lover of God in actual fact.
As for His hatred, exalted is He, for certain particular ones, as in His words: “And God does not love any sinful ingrate (Q 2:276) … He does not love the unbelievers (Q 3:32) … He does not love the transgressors (Q 2:190) … He does not love the wasteful (Q 6:141)”, that is a particular hatred, for people of particular attributes.
It stands over against His love, exalted is He, for people of particular attributes, as in His words: “God loves those who turn in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (Q 2:222); He loves those who do good (Q 2:195); He loves the patient (Q 3:146)”, and the like.
This, then, is a particular love from Him, exalted is He, for them, as a recompense for their particular love for Him, exalted is He.
For He, exalted is He, has made the matter go at times from Him to us, and at times from us to Him, as He said: “Then He turned to them, so that they might turn” (Q 9:118).
And He said: “He loves them and they love Him” (Q 5:54).
And He said, concerning what goes from us to Him: “Fulfil My covenant, and I shall fulfil your covenant” (Q 2:40).
And He said: “If you help God, He will help you” (Q 47:7).
So at times the beginning is from Him and the recompense from us, and at times the beginning is from us and the recompense from Him; and each of the two loves has a fruit, I mean the love of the elect for Him, and His love for the elect.
The fruit of their love for Him is carrying out what He, exalted is He, asks, whether the request is binding or not binding, and refraining from what He forbids, whether the request to refrain is a binding request or not;
and the fruit of His love, exalted is He, for them is that He unveils for them what lies concerning themselves, so that they find no “other” and no “besides” for themselves, as has come in the report:
“So when I love him, I am him.”
And in one transmission: “I am his hearing and all his faculties,” … the ḥadīth.
He drew near and came down: the Lord of a servant, and His servant. When we met, there was none but One.
At that point their love is multiplied and their drawings-near increase:
And longing is at its most tormenting, on any day, when the dwellings draw near to the dwellings.
The leader of the lovers and master of the beloved said: “And the delight of my eye has been placed in prayer.”
