  1. Mawqif 276 · “People of the House” and people of hearts

    In brief

Starting from Q 33:33, “God only wishes to remove defilement from you, people of the House”, the Emir reads the purification as their sins occurring already forgiven, with no protection from sin and no permission for it; he compares the people of Badr. If this holds for the Prophet's House, the divine House, the people of hearts that contain the Real, merit more. Whoever belongs to both is doubly honoured, and the Lawgiver weighs inward kinship of the heart above bodily kinship, as with Salmān.

    See the print: Damascus 1966, p. 824, Damascus 1966, p. 825, Damascus 1966, p. 826 (archive.org)

He, exalted is He, said: “God only wishes to remove defilement from you, people of the House, and to purify you thoroughly” (Q 33:33).

Consider this greatest solicitude, this most sublime distinction and this rank of nearness, for the people of the Prophet's House.

    The word “people” (ahl) includes them all, from the first of them to the last one born of them;

He, exalted, restricted His will concerning them to its being for removing defilement from them and purifying them from defilement, which is sin, with a complete purification, emphasised by the verbal noun.

That is, by everything that issues from them of acts of disobedience and contraventions being forgiven them; rather, the forgiveness comes beforehand,

not by their being protected from contraventions, nor that He, exalted, permitted them what He forbade to the rest of the community. Not at all, far from it!

but in the sense that their sins occur already forgiven them, as a divine solicitude.

    This manner of speaking shows regard for the scholars of the people of the outward, and it is true;

and the further manner of speaking is that He, exalted, exempted them from the general rule.

For in al-Bukhārī's Ṣaḥīḥ, concerning the people of Badr: “Do what you will, for the Garden has become due to you.”

And God “does not command indecency” (Q 7:28),

and indecency is nothing but what God has forbidden.

So what is indecent in the general case is not an indecency in the case of these, even though we apply to them the legal ḥadd penalties and discretionary punishments outwardly.

And if His solicitude, exalted, for the people of the Prophet's House is as He has told, then what do you suppose of His solicitude, exalted, for the people of the divine House?!

They are the ones meant by “the people of hearts”!

It has come in the prophetic report: “Hearts are the house of the Lord.”

So the people of the divine House are the people of hearts alluded to in His words: “Surely in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart” (Q 50:37).

They are those meant by His words, exalted, in the sacred ḥadīth: “My earth did not contain Me, nor My heaven, and the heart of My believing servant contained Me.”

Not every heart contains the Real; only the heart of the knower of Him, exalted, contains Him.

Whoever knows Him, exalted, knows everything, for He, exalted, is the reality of every thing.

And whoever knows the reality of a thing knows what has separated from it.

And this supreme solicitude did not come to the people of the Prophet's House except …

…because of their nearness to the Messenger of God (God bless him and grant him peace, and his family), who is near to God (exalted is He); so those who are nearer to God (exalted is He) are more entitled to this care.
