The Book of Stations
Mawqif 301 · “Never, my Lord, have I been wretched in calling upon You”
In briefAI
Starting from Q 19:4, Zakariyyā's “never, my Lord, have I been wretched in calling upon You”, the Emir says whoever God places in the station of supplication is never made wretched by it: either the Real gives what was asked or something better. Even if supplication brought only God's love for the supplicant, that would suffice, since He loves the insistent, after “Call upon Me, I will answer you” (Q 40:60). So the statement holds for every supplicant.

Mawqif
God (exalted is He) said, relating the words of His prophet Zakariyyā (peace be upon him): "and never, my Lord, have I been wretched in calling upon You" (Q 19:4).
He means (peace be upon him) that whoever God has established in the station of supplication is not made wretched by it. For he has the better of the two outcomes and one of the two good things: either the Real answers him with the very thing he prayed for, or He gives him in exchange something better than that, as has come in the Prophetic reports.
So the supplicant is never made wretched by his supplication, whoever he may be.
And even if supplication had no merit other than obtaining God's love for the supplicant, that would suffice.
For God loves those who are insistent in supplication, according to the reports of the Messenger of God (God bless him and grant him peace), just as He placed [this] after His words: "Call upon Me, I will answer you" (Q 40:60).
So Zakariyyā (peace be upon him) does not mean by this only to report about himself that he had not been wretched in calling upon his Lord in the past, and that he hopes this will continue. Rather, every supplicant is in this position.
