  1. Mawqif 346 (excerpt) · The lion dream

Excerpt, not the whole mawqif: only the lion dream (Mawqif 346 runs 22 pages, D pp. 1112–1134). It begins with the Bakrī anecdote and ends after the Kaaba dream; the rest is not established or translated here.

Shaykh Muṣṭafā al-Bakrī, may God be pleased with him, mentioned in his commentary on the Litany of the Pre-Dawn that in the Ṣāliḥiyya of Damascus there was a righteous man who set out to write a commentary on the ʿAyniyya of the imam al-Jīlī, entitled al-Bawādir al-ghaybiyya wa-l-nawādir al-ʿayniyya (“The Unseen Sudden Insights and the Rarities of the Eye”),

About the vowels: added by AI; uncertain words are underlined

The source of this text, a printed edition or a manuscript, has few or no vowel marks, as is usual for such texts. The vowels shown were added by AI and checked against an independent grammatical analyser; the few words where the two disagree are underlined as uncertain. Choose “Unvowelled” under Aa to read the letters alone.

  2. 351

Then he saw Shaykh Muḥyī al-Dīn, may God be pleased with him, in a dream. He forbade him what he had set out to do and said to him: “Do not do it, for he threw three pebbles at me.” And he interpreted them as his criticism of the three questions.

  3. 352

The helpless servant says (and the one speaking is our spiritual shaykh Muḥyī al-Dīn, may God be pleased with him, the servant being his translator):

  4. 353

For speech is sometimes attributed to the one who said it, as He, exalted is He, says: “grant him protection so that he may hear the speech of God” (Q 9:6).

  5. 354

    وَمَا سَمِعَهُ الْمُشْرِكُ اِلَّا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ-

    Yet the idolater heard it only from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace;

  6. 355

and sometimes it is attributed to the translator, as He, exalted is He, says: “it is the speech of a noble messenger” (Q 81:19).

  7. 356

and that is Gabriel, peace be upon him.

  8. 357

    وَاِنِّي بَعْدَمَا كَتَبْتُ بَعْضَ السُّطُورِ مِنْ هَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةِ رَأَيْتُ شَيْخَنَا وَسَيِّدَنَا مُحْيِالدِّينِ فِي الْمَنَامِ فِي صُورَةِ أَسَدٍ،

    After I had written some lines of this treatise, I saw our shaykh and master Muḥyī al-Dīn in a dream in the form of a lion;

  9. 358

the form was the form of a lion, and there was no doubt that he was Shaykh Muḥyī al-Dīn, may God be pleased with him.

  10. 359

In that lion's left hand was a huge chain, like the chains put on the necks of lions to keep them from attacking.

  11. 360

The lion spoke to me and said: “Put your hand into my mouth.” I was afraid,

  12. 361

for habit and nature decree that a human being fears a lion.

  13. 362

He said to me: “Do not be afraid.” So I put my hand into his mouth and drew it out unharmed.

  14. 363

Then he changed from the form of the lion into the form of a human being, the form in which I had seen him, may God be pleased with him, more than once, except that he was love-distraught and enraptured, speaking confusedly.

  15. 364

I walked along with him, talking with him,

  16. 365

then he turned to me and said: “Here I am, I go and die twice or three times,” and he fell to the ground.

  17. 366

I woke, and I interpreted his appearing in the form of the lion: it pointed to his rank among the friends of God, exalted is He, like the lion among all the other animals.

  18. 367

And so he is, for he, may God be pleased with him, is as was said: “They encamped at Mecca among the clans of Nawfal, / and I encamped in the desert, at the remotest of camps.”

  19. 368
