He, Exalted is He, said: "He has indeed prospered who purifies it, and he has indeed failed who conceals it" (Q 91:9–10).
Zakāh is purity. The purifying of the soul is cleansing it of its claiming for itself what is not its own, and restraining it from usurping the perfections of another and adorning itself with them, until it abandons all false claims
for the soul claims existence alongside the Real, Exalted is He, and in this claim it is wicked and lying;
and it has usurped the perfections that follow upon existence (knowledge, power, choice, acting and refraining) and adorned itself with them and claimed them, and in its claim it is wicked
For existence, and every perfection that follows upon existence, belongs exclusively to the Real, Exalted is He; He has no partner in that.
So whoever knows that he is manifest nonexistence, and has verified that he has no knowledge, no power, no act and no choice, and that he is a locus for the act of the Real, Exalted is He (for He is the agent in him and through him), he is the one who has purified his soul and cleansed it of injustice and wickedness.
And whoever does not know this and claims its opposite, he is the one who has concealed his soul: "and he has indeed failed who conceals it" (Q 91:10).
Al-dass is the concealing of a thing and covering it over.
So whoever claims for himself an existence alongside the Real, Exalted is He, has covered his nonexistence with the existence of the Real, Exalted is He.
Likewise whoever claims for himself a perfection, of knowledge, power or choice, has covered his incapacity, his ignorance and his weakness with the knowledge of the Real, Exalted is He, and His power and His strength.
And whoever claims what is not in him is put to shame when the truth comes to light and becomes plain.
