The Book of Stations

  1. Mawqif 6 and 7 · “I” and “He”: the other vanishes

    See the print: Damascus 1966, p. 38, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 50, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 51 (archive.org)

    كَانَ الْحَقُّ تَعَالَى لِحَقِيقَتِهِ يَقُولُ: أَنَا، وَالْعَبْدُ لِجَهْلِهِ يَقُولُ: أَنَا،

    The Real, exalted is He, would say, by virtue of His reality: "I"; and the servant would say, out of his ignorance: "I";

    About the vowels: added by AI; uncertain words are underlined

    The source of this text, a printed edition or a manuscript, has few or no vowel marks, as is usual for such texts. The vowels shown were added by AI and checked against an independent grammatical analyser; the few words where the two disagree are underlined as uncertain. Choose “Unvowelled” under Aa to read the letters alone.

  2. 29

    and the servant would say "He", because he beheld distance from his Lord; and the Lord would say "He", because that is what the servant beheld.

  3. 30

    Then, when the dawn of providential care breathed, and the caller of guidance began [to call], and the six and the five shone with the shining of the sun, the "He" vanished from between [us],

  4. 31

    and "I" became indistinguishable from "I", essence with essence, without mixing, or union, or indwelling, since all of these are deposed in our path and our tawḥīd.

  5. 32

    For with us there is nothing but a single existence, which is [one] essence; and the condition of the three, according to the [holders of the] three, is the multiplicity of existence and of essence.

  6. 33

    So they do not muddy our ranks with their mumbling, nor alarm us with their […].

  7. Mawqif 7 · begins here, on the same printed page (D p. 38)

    34

    The Real took me away from myself, and brought me near to myself,

  8. 35

    and heaven vanished with the vanishing of earth, the whole mingled with the part, length and breadth ceased to be, the supererogatory came to the obligatory, and the being-dyed came to the pure,

  9. 36

    وَانْتَهَى السَّيْرُ، فَانْتَفَى الْغَيْرُ، وَصَحَّ النَّسَبُ، بِاِسْقَاطِ الْاِضَافَاتِ وَالِاعْتِبَارَاتِ وَالنِّسَبِ،

    The journeying came to its end, so the other was negated, and the lineage was established by dropping the attributions, the aspects and the relations;

  10. 37

    الْيَوْمَ أَضَعُ اَنْسَابَكُمْ• وَأَرْفَعُ نَسَبِي،

    "Today I lower your lineages and raise My lineage";

  11. 38

    Then there was said to me the like of al-Ḥallāj's saying, except that al-Ḥallāj said it, whereas it was said to me, and I do not say it.

  12. 39

    This speech is known and accepted by its people, and is unknown to and denied by the one whose ignorance has prevailed.
