It is reported in the Ṣaḥīḥ of Muslim: “God, Exalted is He, discloses Himself to the people of the Standing, and says to them: ‘I am your Lord.’ And they say to Him: ‘We seek refuge in God from you; you are not our Lord. This is our place until our Lord comes to us; and when our Lord comes to us, we shall know Him.’”
The incoming of the moment asked about the self-disclosure that comes first to the people of the Gathering, from which they seek refuge, the one who affirms transcendence and the one who affirms likeness alike, except the knowers of God, Exalted is He: what is it?!
For if it were a self-disclosure of transcendence, those who affirm transcendence would acknowledge it;
and if it were a self-disclosure of likeness, those who affirm likeness would acknowledge it.
And what is known is nothing but these two ranks.
The answer was: that He, Exalted is He, discloses Himself on that Day with a self-disclosure that combines transcendence and likeness, in a mode to which intellects are not guided, nor unveiling now.
The Real, Exalted is He, is known only through His combining of opposites; rather, He is the very identity of the opposites, not that there is an entity there that combines the opposites.
That is why none recognizes the Real, Exalted is He, in that self-disclosure and acknowledges Him except the group that knows Him, the one that combined belief in transcendence and likeness in the abode of this world;
and every other group seeks refuge from the Real, Exalted is He; then He discloses Himself to them in their beliefs about Him and their imaginings of Him in this world, and they acknowledge Him and confess to Him His Lordship.
And He is the very same, the One denied at first and known second. So glory be to the All-Embracing, the Wise!
