About this text
  1. Mawqif 55 · “What you are promised is surely coming”

    See the print: Damascus 1966, p. 112, Cairo, vol. 1, PDF p. 119 (archive.org)

He, Most High, said: "What you are promised is surely coming, and you cannot thwart it" (Q 6:134).

The word "mā" ("what") is coined for generality,

so every promise and every threat comes to the one to whom it is promised, and overtakes him, whether it be good or evil, in this world and the next, whether he sought it or fled from it,

meaning that whatever has been decreed for each human being, or against him, and concerning which the eternal knowledge and the beginningless will have gone before that it shall overtake him, will reach him without fail.

So no one is able to thwart what has been decreed and outrun it, such that what was decreed for him or against him would not overtake him, whether he sought it or did not seek it,

and whether he fled from it or went out to meet it.
