Mawqif 1 · “The Messenger of God, a fair example”
In briefAI
Starting from Q 33:21, “in the Messenger of God you have a fair example”, the Emir says he received this verse by an inner reception without letter, sound or direction. The Folk keep a verse's outward sense and understand more besides. He unfolds four ways the Prophet is an example: how God dealt with him, setting him now at the rank of His own Self, now at the rank of the lowly servant; how he dealt with his Lord; how creatures dealt with him; and how he dealt with creatures.
Context: among the ways the Prophet is a model, the Emir lists how God dealt with him, including wars that went in his favour and against him, and verses that place him now at the rank of God's own Self, now at the rank of the lowly servant.

God Most High has said: “Truly, in the Messenger of God you have a fair example” (Q 33:21).
This noble verse I received by a reception from the Unseen, a spiritual one,
for God Most High has made it His custom with me that whenever He wishes to command me, or forbid me, or give me good tidings, or warn me, or teach me some knowledge, or answer me on a matter about which I asked Him for an answer, He takes me from myself while the outward trace remains,
then He casts to me what He wishes by the allusion of a noble verse of the Qurʾān,
then He returns me to myself, and I come back with the verse, my eye cooled with joy, my hands full,
then He inspires me with what He meant by the verse; and I receive the verse without letter, sound or direction.
In this way I have received, and the grace is God’s, Most High, about half of the Qurʾān,
and I hope from the generosity of God Most High that I shall not die until I hold the whole Qurʾān [in this way].
So by God’s favour I am one whose incomings are guarded, in their departures and their arrivals; Satan has no authority over me,
since the speech of God Most High is not brought by a devil: “The devils did not bring it down; it does not befit them, nor are they able” (Q 26:210–211).
Every verse I have spoken on, I received in this way only, save rarely.
The people of our Path, may God be pleased with them, have not claimed to bring anything new in religion;
what they have claimed is only a new understanding in an ancient religion.
They are supported by the transmitted report that a man’s understanding is not complete until he sees many facets in the Qurʾān.
and the other report, that the Qurʾān has an outward and an inward, a limit and a place of ascent, which Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted in his Ṣaḥīḥ;
and the saying transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās, may God be pleased with them both, that he said: “No bird moves its wings in the sky but we find it in the Book of God.”
and his prayer, God bless him and give him peace, for Ibn ʿAbbās: “O God, give him understanding in religion and teach him interpretation.”
And in the Ṣaḥīḥ, from ʿAlī, may God honour his face: it was said to him, “Did the Messenger of God, God bless him and give him peace, single you out, the People of the House, with anything apart from other people?”, meaning of knowledge; and he said: “No, by Him who split the grain and created the soul, unless it be an understanding of the Book of God that a man is given, and what is in this scroll.”
